External Masonry Restoration

The Breathable House Company were hired to make masonry repairs to this grade II listed farmhouse, in Ewelme, Oxfordshire.

The north elevation stack was in poor condition and required complete repointing and re-flaunching in moderate hydraulic mortar. We also took the opportunity to cap the redundant pot. Masonry wasp and ivy growth had accelerated weathering to the soft lime mortar on the front elevation and later repairs in cement had caused soft handmade bricks to spall. We repointed in hot lime mortar where necessary and replaced the spalled bricks like for like. We added lime flaunching to the 19th century rear porch with a clay tile abutment. We also removed the cement pointing from the 17th century boundary wall and restored it’s tile saddle which had been lifted by vegetation.

“The Breathable House Company has done a great job on our brick and flint, Grade 2 listed Georgian house. It’s like they've given it a very kind, fresh, sympathetic face lift! All their work was carefully considered; they were open to a lot of discussion with me, taking the time to explain in layman’s terms what they thought should be done and why the materials they suggested would be better and in-keeping with our very old home. They also gave good and honest advice about what was (and was not) worth doing for the best. When they started the work it was totally unobtrusive, they just got on with the job quietly… taking care over their craft and the detail and always clearing up afterwards leaving the area tidy. They take great care over their craft and in doing so create high quality results. We will be using them again in future! Thank you!
